The state of Wyoming is moving forward with ambitious plans to construct a comprehensive shooting facility that will serve as a premier destination for various shooting sports and competitions. Located in the scenic Cody region, this expansive project represents a significant investment in recreational shooting infrastructure.

Legislative Foundation and Timeline

Project Origins

The initiative gained momentum through the Wyoming state legislature in 2023, establishing the framework for what will become one of the region's most comprehensive shooting facilities. The legislative backing demonstrates the state's commitment to supporting shooting sports and outdoor recreation activities.

Development Schedule

Current projections indicate that groundbreaking ceremonies will commence sometime during 2025, with facility managers targeting a soft opening for 2026. However, project coordinators continue to address several logistical considerations, including access road construction and securing final funding commitments.

Strategic Site Selection and Natural Advantages

Terrain Considerations

Project planners deliberately chose a location that maximizes the area's natural topographical features. The selected site offers diverse elevation changes, rolling hills, and natural valley formations that provide unique opportunities for varied shooting disciplines and challenging course configurations.

Geographic Benefits

The natural landscape variations make this facility particularly well-suited for specialized competitions such as NRL Hunter events, where terrain diversity and realistic field conditions are essential components of the competitive experience.

Comprehensive Range Facilities

Outdoor Range Infrastructure

The complex will feature multiple specialized outdoor ranges designed to accommodate different shooting disciplines and skill levels. A dedicated 600-yard range equipped with modern electronic targeting systems will serve precision rifle shooters, while multiple pistol bays will provide versatile training and competition spaces.

Indoor Climate-Controlled Facilities

Recognizing the region's harsh winter conditions, planners have prioritized indoor shooting options. The facility will include dedicated indoor ranges for smallbore rifles, air rifle competitions, and archery activities, ensuring year-round accessibility regardless of weather conditions.

Sporting Clay and Trap/Skeet Operations

The complex will cater to shotgun sports enthusiasts with comprehensive clay target facilities, including multiple trap and skeet fields alongside specialized sporting clay courses that take advantage of the natural terrain features.

Official Facility Specifications

From the state:

"The Wyoming State Shooting Complex spans roughly 2,000 acres of scenic state land, just 7.5 miles south of Cody along Highway 120 a quick 10-minute drive from town. Nested in two parallel valleys, the site offers varied terrain, natural buffers and 360-degree mountain views; overall, a "blank canvas" for development. Planned facilities include a 16,000-square-foot event center, modern technology range, pistol/flex bays, long-range bays, two sporting clay ranges, 3-D archery range, six skeet fields, ten trap fields, high terrain rifle/configurable space, and indoor archery, air rifle, and small bore ranges."

Scale and Accessibility

Facility Scope

The anticipated facility will encompass over 2,000 acres of diverse terrain, making it one of the larger shooting complexes in the region. This substantial footprint allows for proper safety zones, multiple simultaneous activities, and future expansion opportunities.

Location Advantages

Situated just 7.5 miles south of Cody along Highway 120, the complex offers convenient access while maintaining appropriate distance from residential areas. The 10-minute drive from town ensures accessibility without compromising safety or noise considerations.

Natural Setting

The facility's location within two parallel valleys provides natural sound barriers and stunning 360-degree mountain views, creating an exceptional environment for shooting sports while minimizing impact on surrounding areas.

Specialized Range Features

High Terrain Rifle Complex

The "High Terrain Rifle" facility represents a unique approach to rifle range design, incorporating the site's natural hills and valleys to create realistic field shooting scenarios. This configurable space can accommodate various competition formats and training exercises.

Event and Support Infrastructure

A substantial 16,000-square-foot event center will serve as the facility's hub, providing space for competitions, training seminars, equipment vendors, and community gatherings related to shooting sports.

Technology Integration

Modern electronic targeting systems and advanced range technology will enhance the shooting experience while providing precise feedback for both recreational shooters and competitive athletes.

The Wyoming State Shooting Complex represents a significant investment in outdoor recreation infrastructure, positioning the state as a destination for shooting sports enthusiasts while providing valuable training and competition facilities for local residents.
