SHOT Show 2026: Blackout Dynamics Introduces the Helix Gas Regulating Barrel System

Author: | Publish Date: Feb 15, 2026 | Fact checked by: Marko Lalovic

At SHOT Show 2026, we spent time with Blackout Dynamics (formerly Blackout Defense) to get a deep technical look at one of the most engineering-forward systems on the show floor: the Helix Gas Regulating Barrel System—along with new muzzle devices, triggers, charging handles, and a preview of what’s coming next in AR-10 and precision rifle development.

Dual Taper Locking: The Foundation

Blackout Dynamics has long been known for its Dual Taper Locking barrel interface, and the Helix system builds directly on that foundation.

The design uses:

  • A tapered barrel extension

  • A matching taper on the barrel itself

  • Two internally tapered barrel nuts

Together, these tapers guarantee concentricity between the barrel bore and the upper receiver, while creating an exceptionally rigid mounting system. The result is improved alignment, repeatable accuracy, and a rock-solid interface—especially important for suppressed shooting.

Helix Gas Regulating Barrel System

What’s new for 2026 is the integration of gas regulation directly into the barrel itself.

Instead of a traditional adjustable gas block with set screws, the Helix system uses:

  • A toolless external control knob

  • An internally threaded barrel

  • A transfer plate and solid adjustment rod

As the knob is turned, the adjustment rod moves forward or backward to restrict or open the gas port. The system allows everything from fully open to 100% closed, where the bolt will not move at all.

Key engineering advantages:

  • No threaded set screws exposed to carbon fouling

  • No carbon lock or seizure

  • Exceptionally fine adjustment

The adjustment rod is made from M42 cobalt steel, selected for extreme heat resistance. During testing, Blackout Dynamics ran 1,500 rounds of full-auto fire in under 30 minutes. While some erosion was visible, the rod retained the majority of its material and remained functional—well beyond what most shooters would ever experience.

A locking feature on the underside allows users to mechanically lock in their gas setting, though the detent system already provides strong resistance to movement.

Plan B Compatible Muzzle Devices

New for 2026, Blackout Dynamics also introduced Plan B–compatible muzzle devices, manufactured from 17-4 stainless steel and heat-treated to H900 condition, giving them their distinctive bronze appearance.

Details include:

  • Available in 1/2x28 and 5/8x24

  • Short, medium, and long lengths

  • Offered as hybrid, flash hider, or dedicated brake

  • Finishes: bronze heat-treat and black nitride

MSRP ranges from $80 to $100, making them an accessible upgrade for suppressed builds.

Triggers, Charging Handles & Core Components

Blackout Dynamics continues to machine critical components entirely in-house in Chandler, Arizona.

Triggers

  • Made from S7 tool steel

  • EDM-cut, assembled, and tested in-house

  • Short, tactile reset

  • AR-15 options: 3 lb or 4.5 lb

  • AR-10 option: 4 lb

  • Available with flat, curved, or hybrid trigger shoes

Charging Handles

Designed specifically for suppressed use, these feature:

  • Right- and left-side gas deflection channels

  • Compact or standard latch sizes

  • Extremely strong latch geometry to prevent disengagement under backpressure

AR-15 versions are available now, with AR-10 charging handles entering full production within 4–6 weeks.

Complete Builds, Barrels & Compatibility

Blackout Dynamics offers:

  • Complete rifles: ~$2,500–$2,700 MSRP

  • Complete uppers with Helix: ~$1,200–$1,600 MSRP

  • Standalone barrels: ~$500–$800 depending on caliber and length

Barrels are available in:

While the Dual Taper system requires Blackout’s proprietary handguard, the company also offers mil-spec extension barrels with flat torque shoulders, making them compatible with third-party uppers.

The barrel nut system is reversible, allowing users to swap in standard third-party barrels if desired—maintaining flexibility rarely seen in proprietary systems.

AR-10 Expansion & Precision Focus

The rebrand from Blackout Defense to Blackout Dynamics reflects the company’s move into longer-range precision platforms.

Coming soon:

  • AR-10 platform with Helix system

  • Initial calibers: .308, followed by 6.5

  • Expected MSRP: $4,000–$4,500, depending on configuration

They also previewed carbon-fiber tripods, currently in the prototyping phase, aimed at DMR and precision shooters. These are being actively refined based on shooter feedback.

Final Thoughts

Blackout Dynamics delivered one of the most technically impressive showings at SHOT Show 2026. The Helix Gas Regulating Barrel System isn’t just another adjustable gas solution—it’s a ground-up rethink of how gas control, barrel alignment, and long-term durability should work together.

With in-house manufacturing, reverse compatibility with mil-spec components, and a clear push into precision and AR-10 platforms, Blackout Dynamics is positioning itself well beyond standard AR manufacturers.
