Penis Size and Gun Ownership May Be Related – But Not How People Think

One of the main anti-gun talking points these days usually involves asking a firearm owner whether they’re compensating for their small penis size. But according to data from a recent study, the assumed link between penis size and gun ownership may actually be the opposite of the truth. Here’s a look at the data.
Gun Owners are Not Compensating for Penis Size, Study Finds
A new study published in the American Journal of Men’s Health looked at the relationship between gun ownership and dissatisfaction with penis size.
Published on May 31, 2024, the study saw researchers from multiple institutions across Texas and Florida team up to get to the bottom of this age-old rumor. Far from being gun advocates, though, these researchers have previously published a paper on the “Psychosexual Theory of Gun Ownership.”
This theory assumes that men buy guns – and sporting rifles like AR-15 in particular – to compensate for “lost virility.” The researchers originally conducted this study to confirm their biases that gun ownership and penis size were connected.
The Psychosexual Theory of Gun Ownership has four core pillars:
- Guns are phallic symbols.
- Guns are primarily used by men.
- Men who perceive their penises as smaller than average have self-confidence issues and may try to do something to compensate for this.
- Men are socialized to view guns
Unfortunately for them, their research appears to contradict their previous theory. Rather than confirming that gun owners were compensating for their small penises, the data appears to show that men who own firearms are generally content with their penis size.
Data visualized.
The study looked at a sample of 2,024 men from across the country. It attempted to establish links between gun ownership and psychological attributes like penis size dissatisfaction, experiences with penis enlargement, social desirability, masculinity, body mass, and mental health.
Researchers found a few interesting results.
- If a man owned a “military-style rifle,” they tended to be more satisfied with the “gear they were running.”
- The more guns a man owned, the more satisfied he was with his penis size.
- Gun owners are often “reluctant to answer questions” because they’re “afraid they’ll be stigmatized.”
The Bottom Line
This entire story was too good for me to pass up. First, we finally have concrete evidence proving what gun owners already know. Guns have nothing to do with your dick.
Second, there’s an added layer of schadenfreude to this story. These researchers were trying to confirm a theory that they made up – that gun owners are compensating for their small penises. But real-world data has thrown a monkey wrench into their plans.
I fully expect these researchers to continue trying to prove their ideas are correct in spite of evidence to the contrary. But I’m still going to enjoy this as a win.
