NRA Will Sue Mass Over New Gun Laws

Last month, we reported on sweeping new gun control measures in Massachusetts. Now, we’re seeing the gun community’s first response. Last week, the NRA announced that it would sue the state of Massachusetts over the legality of its new gun control measures.
NRA Will Sue Mass Over New Gun Laws
In July, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey signed Amendment S. 2572 into law. The new implements draconian new gun control measures, including defining and banning “assault weapons” and “ghost guns,” prohibiting guns in “sensitive places,” implementing red flag laws, and a swath of other changes.
NRA Responds
Less than a week after Massachusetts passed the new law, the NRA’s Executive Director for Legislative Action, Randy Kozuch, responded. In a statement, Kozuch said that “the NRA will be challenging this law to restore the rights guaranteed to Bay Staters by the US Constitution.”
Kozuch also thanked the bipartisan group of legislators that voted against Amendment S. 2572. One Democrat senator and seven Democrat representatives crossed party lines and joined Republican lawmakers to oppose the bill.
Upon hearing about the NRA’s response, Governor Healy said that “Massachusetts is proud of our strong gun laws.” She went on further to say that she saw the NRA’s lawsuit as a “real badge of honor.”
The Big Picture
It’s devastating to see Massachusetts pass these gun control laws. During the time of the American Revolution, the Bay State was a hotbed of patriot activity and critical to the rebellion against Britain. Now, the state has become the very thing it rebelled against.
With that being said, this isn’t all doom and gloom. It’s nice to see the NRA is still game to take on restrictive – and most likely illegal – gun control laws. The organization has been sorely mismanaged over the last decade, and a federal lawsuit gutted most of its leadership last year.
Other gun rights groups have popped up to fill the vacuum the NRA left. But now, it seems as though the oldest gun rights group in the US (the NRA was founded in 1871) is trying to get back into the fight.
If you live in Massachusetts and want to do something to support gun rights, check out the Gun Owners’ Action League. It’s the Massachusetts affiliate of the NRA, and will be doing much of the boots-on-the-ground work to fight against these new gun control laws.
It’ll probably take years before the NRA’s potential lawsuit finally comes to a close. In the meantime, Massachusetts residents will have to suffer under some of the most restrictive gun laws in the US. But while they do, they can take some solace in the fact that there’s someone out there fighting to take their rights back.
