A New Mexico Grand Jury has indicted actor and producer Alec Baldwin on charges of involuntary manslaughter. Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison for the charge. Regarding the incident, Baldwin’s attorneys said that they “look forward to their day in court.”
Background
This is yet another development in the shooting death of cinematographer Helyna Hutchins. The incident originally occurred when Baldwin shot and killed Hutchins on the set of the film Rust, which Baldwin was starring in and produced.
On the set of the movie, Baldwin allegedly made a joke about having to film so many takes and pointed the gun at Hutchins. He says the gun went off on its own.
Baldwin has denied any wrongdoing, repeatedly saying that while he did pull the gun’s hammer back, he did not pull the trigger. An FBI investigation found that Baldwin’s claim was impossible. Baldwin has also passed off responsibility to other members of the filming crew, saying that the gun was declared “cold,” or unloaded.
Other members of the Rust crew have been charged with crimes in the incident as well. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the movie’s designated armorer, has also been charged with involuntary manslaughter. Her trial begins on February 21.
Assistant director Dave Halls was charged with negligent use of a deadly weapon and pleaded no contest last March. The court sentenced him to six months of unsupervised probation.
In an interview in 2021, Baldwin said “I know that someone is responsible for what happened…but I know it’s not me.”
Final Thoughts
The saga just keeps on rolling. This case has been a rollercoaster ever since the victim was shot nearly 3 years ago. When the story first broke, I assumed Baldwin – a huge proponent of gun control – would get a taste of actual justice. After all, he did point a gun at someone’s head and pull the trigger, breaking two of the cardinal rules of gun safety (treat every gun as if it were loaded and never point a gun at something you don’t intend to destroy.
Instead, we’ve seen a media circus that has dragged on into the present day. At this point, I don’t really expect Baldwin to see any sort of punishment. I do find it ironic that a guy who has built much of his career off playing gun-toting heroes in movies now finds himself in this situation. It just goes to show that you can get away with murder if you have the right connections.
