Colorado “Sensitive Places” Gun Prohibition Bill Leaked

Author: Jack Collins | Publish Date: Jan 11, 2024

Just days after a federal court blocked  California from implementing a bill that would ban carrying a gun in so-called “sensitive places,” sources appear to have leaked a similar bill working its way through Colorado’s legislature. While it might seem like a coincidence, it’s actually straight from the gun control playbook.

What is Colorado’s “Sensitive Places” Bill?

The proposed law, sponsored by two Democratic senators with less than 4 years of experience between them, seeks to penalize Coloradans who carry weapons in certain areas. First-time offenders would receive a misdemeanor and a $250 fine, while repeat offenders would face a misdemeanor and a $1000 fine. Concealed carry permit holders are still subject to the ban, making their permits essentially worthless.

The bill defines “sensitive places” as:

  • Public Parks
  • Recreational Facilities
  • Public Events like Marches, Rallies, etc.
  • Public or Private Hospitals
  • Mental Health/Drug Addiction Facilities
  • Banks
  • Stadiums (Professional, College, High School, or Club)
  • Amusement Parks
  • Courthouses
  • Libraries
  • Correctional Facilities
  • Homeless Shelters
  • Daycares or Preschools
  • Any property owned, rented, or leased by a state or local government
  • Any meeting property for state or local government officials

The bill was leaked just four days after the US 9th Circuit Appeals Court upheld a decision that a similar bill in California violated citizens of the Golden State’s Second Amendment rights.

Final Thoughts

With the way things are going in California, it seems like this bill likely won’t be signed into law. However, it does illustrate one of the main techniques the anti-gun lobby employs.

Groups like Everytown realize that it’s going to be difficult for them to affect national-level gun control laws. The Biden administration also threw its hat in the ring last month when it revealed its new state-based gun control plan, the “ Safer States Initiative.”

You can expect to see these kinds of laws popping up in more states in the future.
