Breaking the Chains: Franklin Armory’s Antithesis Ushers in a New Age for Short-Barreled Firearms

Author: | Publish Date: Sep 17, 2025 | Fact checked by: Marko Lalovic

A major shift in firearms regulation and innovation has just arrived: the Franklin Armory Antithesis™ line—a groundbreaking series of short-barreled firearms that are not regulated by the National Firearms Act (NFA). For gun enthusiasts, lawful owners, and industry professionals, this marks a game-changing moment with broad implications for the Second Amendment community.

UPDATE: ATF Reversal Leads to 5.56 Recall

What Is the Franklin Armory Antithesis?

The Antithesis™ is a new class of firearm, engineered to fire both single and multiple projectile ammunition, all from a rifled barrel. Unlike short-barreled rifles (SBRs) or shotguns (SBSs), which require cumbersome NFA paperwork and taxation, the Antithesis™ falls solely under the Gun Control Act (GCA)—not the NFA.

  • Available in 12.5", 12", and 7.5" barrel lengths, all chambered in 5.56 NATO.

  • Features a rifled barrel and standard AR-platform ergonomics.

  • Designed specifically to fire both single and multiple projectile fixed cartridges, a unique trait which distinguishes it from traditional SBRs or SBSs.

The Legal Breakthrough: Antithesis and the ATF

The pivotal factor behind the Antithesis’s unique status is a 2025 federal court ruling. The court, affirming a consent decree between Franklin Armory and the Department of Justice, concluded that the Antithesis™ is not an NFA firearm because:

  • It is not a "firearm" as defined under 26 U.S.C. § 5845(a).

  • It is not a "short-barreled rifle" as defined under 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(8).

  • It is regulated only under the GCA, with no NFA tax, registration, or interstate transport restrictions.

Judge Daniel M. Traynor wrote, “The Antithesis is a square peg and calling it round will not change how it fits into the round hole of these statutes. Therefore, ATF exceeded its authority by not giving the plain meaning to the words of the statute”.

You can read more in the open letter issued by the ATF.

What Does This Mean for Gun Owners?

  • Franklin Armory Antithesis™ models can now be purchased and transferred with a simple Form 4473 (standard background check and documentation for most gun purchases).

  • No NFA tax stamp, no waiting period, and no special registration are required.

  • Owners are free from many restrictions related to interstate transport and familial transfers that typically apply to SBRs or SBSs.

Note: These firearms are available nationally but banned in a handful of restrictive states (CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, HI, IL, MA, MD, NJ, NY, OR, RI, VT, WA). See image below:

Franklin Armory is offering licensing rights for the Antithesis™ so other manufacturers can harness this design innovation. The impact is likely to ripple across the American firearms market, prompting further innovation and potentially challenging existing regulatory definitions.

For sectors invested in the Second Amendment, the Antithesis™ is a milestone that could set the precedent for future legal and product development.
