Bearing Arms: Austin Amputee Gets License to Carry

The Constitution's Second Amendment gives all Americans the right to bear arms – even double amputees. This month, an Austin, TX man proved that when he earned his permit to carry a handgun.
The Story
The story begins on November 12, when Central Texas Gun Works owner Michael Cargill posted a video to his X account. In the video, Cargill can be seen training a man with no arms to shoot a Ruger LCP II.
Never say can’t…here is your Sunday motivation. I had the opportunity of training this young man this weekend in the rain. #PewPew #2A pic.twitter.com/cayKTog6Ew

The shooter had contacted Central Texas Gun Works and inquired about training to receive his handgun permit. He told Cargill that he wanted to carry a gun for self-defense.
In the minute-and-a-half video, the man can be seen loading .22 LR cartridges into a magazine, inserting the magazine into a pistol, and racking the slide. Then, he takes aim and unloads at a target.
The man and Cargill developed a unique shooting style, deciding how the man would rack the gun and which toe he would use to pull the trigger. Cargill said that the man was an outstanding student, and hit targets at 3, 7, and 15 yards.
Cargill said he had no previous experience helping disabled people learn to shoot, but he plans on using the video to inspire more disabled people to get into shooting.
The Context
While Texas law allows most people aged 21 and older to carry guns both concealed and openly, the city of Austin has its own handgun permit requirements.
This isn’t the first time that Cargill has made headlines. Central Texas Gun Works is one of the plaintiffs on the case that brought Donald Trump’s bump stock ban to the Supreme Court. In fact, Cargill actually testified before the Supreme Court last year.
Aside from being a feel-good story, this is a tale that really does illustrate that the Second Amendment is for everyone.
