Babylon Village on Long Island has recently implemented legislation prohibiting the sale of firearms within its boundaries. The new ordinance affects all residents of this community of over 12,000 people and appears to encompass both commercial and private firearm transactions.

While the complete text of the legislation wasn't immediately available for review, information shared on the Long Island Firearms forum prior to the January town council meeting outlined the proposed regulation.

The enacted ordinance defines what constitutes a firearm and states: "§117-4 Sale of Firearms Prohibited The sale of firearms, ammunition, fireworks or other explosives as hereinabove defined within the Village of Babylon is hereby and expressly prohibited."

The ordinance makes no distinction between commercial establishments and private transfers. According to local news sources, the only exemption granted is for a biannual gun show held at the American Legion Hall.

Some community members have expressed support for the measure. One resident, who cited her son's murder in Las Vegas, voiced approval for stricter gun regulations in Long Island.

Deputy Mayor Frank Siebert, who has been active in Babylon's political and non-profit sectors, told the Babylon Beacon: "For safety reasons, I think this is a good policy."

However, the ordinance has met with opposition from gun owners in the area who believe it infringes upon their Second Amendment rights. A discussion thread in the NYGuns subreddit is already organizing support for potential legal action. Critics suggest this regulation, like other gun control measures enacted recently, will likely lead to costly legal challenges funded by both gun owners and taxpayers, especially given that existing legal precedents suggest such legislation may be constitutionally problematic.
